Kingsoft Signs Up Microsoft Exec As CEO

Chinese software company Kingsoft has signed up a senior Microsoft executive in Asia as its new CEO. Before joining Hong Kong-listed Kingsoft, Zhang Hong Jiang, 50, was the chief technology officer for the Microsoft Asia-Pacific Research and Development Group and the managing director of the Microsoft Advanced Technology Center, leading the company’s research agenda in China.

Zhang holds a Ph.D. from the Technical University of Denmark, and a B.S. degree from Zhengzhou University, both in electrical engineering. Prior to joining Microsoft, Zhang was a research manager at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Palo Alto. He also worked at the Institute of Systems Science at the National University of Singapore. Currently, he is also a professor and Ph.D supervisor at University of Science and Technology of China and a guest professor at Tsinghua University.

How to disable automatic online updates in Kingsoft Office activation version

Every time you run any Kingsoft Office 2010 application, built-in default setting are used and software will check for online update. In some situations (e.g. enterprise use) or any time when multi user license holder like to keep all systems identical, it makes a sense to turn off automatic updates. Just follow these instructions for the 6.6.0.2496 version distributed through online updates.

Go to Kingsoft Office Tools and run Configuration Tools.
Click in Advanced then Update Settings tab.
Choose in Update mode: “Do not check for updates automatically”.

Instructions are slightly different for a current commercially distributed version from BinaryNow. Follow these instructions for the 6.6.0.2477 version which is the last version that does not use Kingsoft activation portal.

Go to Kingsoft Office Tools and run Configuration Tools.
Click in Advanced then Update Settings tab.
Under Connection insert a false settings, e.g. 127.0.0.1 and port 4828.

Note: Kingsoft Office 2010 (6.6.02477) will try to update itself, but due false connection settings it will not be able to connect to update server and will continue working as is. This means that you serial key will not be verified at Kingsoft activation portal and you will not be able to download new updates. If you update to 2496 build than your serial key will be verified through Kingsoft activation portal and new build will be provided to you. Change the default template using a custom spreadsheet in Kingsoft Spreadsheets

Every time you create a new spreadsheet in Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2010, built-in setting are used for the font, text color, page margins and more. If you wish to change any of these parameters you will need to create a custom spreadsheet template and set this template as the default. Just follow these instructions and you will be creating new files based on your desired settings in no time.

Create Custom Spreadsheet Template

Open Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2010.
Create a new spreadsheet with the settings you wish (e.g. Page Margins, Headers/Footers, etc.).
Save the file as Normal.ett and select the type as Kingsoft Spreadsheets Templates (*.ett).
This file must be saved to the following directory: %appdata%\Kingsoft\office6\templates\

Set Custom Template as Default

Open Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2010.
Click File – New from Other Templates…
Select Normal from the list, check the box Set as Default Template at the bottom, and click OK.

Password protect workbook, sheets and cell ranges with Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2010

Kingsoft Office 2010 includes many workbook protection functions in Kingsoft Spreadsheets. If a user wants to protect cells, they can set which cell ranges can, or cannot be modified. This helps users lock information in a reasonable way and avoids others from overwriting important data. Usually this function is used to prepare a sheet for filling or protecting important data from being modified.

Click Protect on the Tools menu and choose Protect Sheet. Please refer to the following screenshot:

This will allow you to restrict others from modifying the sheet, and also regulate data entry.

Change Windows file associations on .DOCX, .XLSX and .PPTX to Kingsoft Office 2010

Kingsoft Office includes a configuration utility that can easily change Windows file associations. From this application you can assign Kingsoft Writer to Microsoft .DOCX, Kingsoft Spreadsheets to .XLSX, and Kingsoft Presentation to .PPTX. This will allow you to double-click files in Windows Explorer and they will launch in the appropriate Kingsoft Office application. Read below to see how this works.

Change Windows File Associations

The Kingsoft Office Configuration Tool application allows you configure file associations. Do the following to make Kingsoft Office open .DOCX / .XLSX / .PPTX files by default:

Open the Kingsoft Office program group.
Launch the Kingsoft Office Configuration Tools applications.
Click Advanced.
Click the File Associations tab and make sure all options are enabled (see screenshot below).
Click OK.

You will now be able to double-click Microsoft Office Open XML files from Windows Explorer and the appropriate Kingsoft Office application will be launched.

Kingsoft Office 2010: Unsecure DLL Hijacking Vulnerability Advisory (plgpf.dll)

Kingsoft Office 2010 is vulnerable to an unsecure DLL hijacking vulnerability. Similar terms used to describe this problem are: Remote Binary Planting, and Unsecure DLL Loading / Injection / Hijacking / Preloading. Kingsoft is aware of the issue and is currently working on a fix. Read below to learn about a temporary workaround that can provide protection until a fix is released.

Vulnerability Description

All Kingsoft Office applications pass an insufficiently qualified path while loading external libraries after a user opens an associated file type. See below for the list of affected file types.

Kingsoft Writer: Affected DLL: plgpf.dll, Affected extensions: .DOC, .RTF
Kingsoft Presentation: Affected DLL: plgpf.dll, Affected extension: .PPT
Kingsoft Spreadsheets: Affected DLL: plgpf.dll, Affected extension: .XLS

Temporary Workaround

This Microsoft update introduces a new registry entry CWDIllegalInDllSearch that allows users to control the DLL search path algorithm. The DLL search path algorithm is used by the LoadLibrary API and the LoadLibraryEx API when DLLs are loaded without specifying a fully qualified path.

The four layer architecture system is the foundation of Kingsoft Office technologies. In order to serve the user better, Kingsoft Office 2010 applies this flexible architecture system. This provides API services directly from the Core Layer of the product, which is totally different from systems applied by Microsoft Office and OpenOffice. The following image shows the details of the four layers:

System Layer: A cross-platform interface to ensure functionality on all systems (e.g. Windows, Linux).

Public Layer: Shared functions to ensure that the system is as small as possible.

API Core Layer: Core engines (Writer, Spreadsheets and Presentation) ensure consistency under different operating environments.

Application Layer: Components that are frequently used (e.g. plug-ins and controls).

To accomplish cross-platform compatibility, Kingsoft has developed a basic class library called KFC (Kingsoft Foundation Class), which casts off the restraints of the framework of MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class) and guarantees the system security and internal optimization of the office suite.

Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2010 allows multiple people to access a workbook at the same time. This can be very handy when a workbook is in active use or development, and there are multiple people in your department who all have a hand in the process. This is a new feature of Kingsoft Office 2010, so make sure you have the latest version installed. Please note that only the native .ET file format can be shared.

Enable Workbook Sharing

Open the workbook you want to share.
Click Share Workbook from the Tools menu.
Enable the option Allow changes by more than one user at the same time.
Click on OK.
If the workbook is not in the .ET format, you will be asked to save the file in this format, click Save.
