Microsoft Word document with table of contents

Label your bookmark headings with the styles Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, etc. To insert a table of contents, just navigate to where you want the TOC to appear and click Insert – Reference – Index and Tables. Once the Index and Tables dialog opens, click the Table of Contents tab, then click OK. If you are using Word 2007, click the References tab and select a Table of Contents format from the list.

Convert a Microsoft Word document using the Print2PDF macro

To begin document conversion in Microsoft Word, just click the Print2PDF macro on the toolbar. If you are using Word 2007 or 2010, click the Print2PDF tab and select Create PDF. Save the file as normal from the Save As PDF dialog (you can add other features if you like, e.g. encryption, digital ID, etc.).

View output PDF in Adobe Reader

When you view the converted document in Adobe Reader you will see that bookmarks were created based on the table of contents in the Word document. You can click the bookmarks from the bookmark tab on the left or from the physical table of contents page on the right.

Name each slide

Make sure you give each slide a descriptive name. Just click each slide, and edit the Name property. This will be used on each page as well as the the name of the bookmark.

Adobe PDF with Bookmarks

Adobe PDF output will include bookmarks that are clickable. Just click the bookmark on the left to be taken to the appropriate page in the PDF.

Microsoft Word .DOC with Table of Contents

Microsoft Word .DOC output includes a complete table of contents. Edit the file as you see fit or distribute the document as is.

Microsoft Word document with a table of contents

Open an existing document with a table of contents or create a new document from scratch. Label your bookmark headings with the styles Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, etc. To insert a table of contents in a document, do the following:

1. Navigate to where you want the table of contents (TOC) to appear.
2. Click Insert – Reference – Table of Contents.
3. Once the Table of Contents dialog opens, click OK.
4. Now click the Export to PDF button on the toolbar.

Convert document to PDF using the PDF Export function

Once the PDF Export process begins you will have many options to choose from. Do the following to easily create an Adobe PDF with a table of contents:

1. Change the file name as you see fit.
2. Click the More button and make sure the following options are enabled: Summary information (metadata), Hyperlink and Convert title styles to bookmarks.
3. Click OK to begin conversion.
4. Click Open File to open the file in Adobe Reader.

View the PDF document in Adobe Reader
