The AV-Comparatives weblog just confirmed their test participants for the year 2010.

Thirty (30) vendors were interested in the tests, but only a limited number of participants were selected. The following vendors are on the tentative participation list for the year 2010 test-series:

Kingsoft Anti-virus Software Wins Major Awards

Kingsoft Internet Security won the 2009 Most Valuable Product award from the most-circulated IT publication in China called Home Computer. Next it became the fastest anti-virus scanning software in the AV-Comparatives test, in which it beat Symantec. Finally, it took home the CHIP Product of the Year award. This award is presented by the leading industry publication, New Computer, and is based on three main criteria: innovation, value, and influence. These awards represent industry recognition of Kingsoft’s excellence and outstanding capability in the anti-virus software market.

Kingsoft MSN Instant Messaging Protection has over 3M monthly users

With the growing popularity of Instant Messaging, the security of this message type has become a great concern. Kingsoft has been an early adopter in this area starting in October 2008, the company reached a strategic cooperation agreement with Microsoft to jointly launch the MSN Protection Shield. This software has been well received by the market with active users and monthly users over 6.59 million and 3 million respectively at the end of January 2010, while daily active users were up to 1.23 million.

Print2PDF 8.0.10.0125 is now available for download. This update is free for all previous 8.x customers. The list of new feature additions and bug fixes are as follows:

[Digital ID] Fixed selection of multiple certificates with the same “Issued to” name.
[Digital ID] Fixed missing metadata in digitally signed PDF.
[Macro] Improved update/removal of Word/Excel Print2PDF macros when either application is running.

Take Jacksonville-based BinaryNow Inc., for example. Its customers buy from the company via their computers using an intangible payment method and receive their intangible product immediately, downloading it directly to their computers.

It’s instant gratification for customers, who get to immediately use the software they’ve just downloaded and installed to their PCs. For Premysl Pech’s BinaryNow, it transitions minding the store to maintaining a Web site that’s at the center of it all.

Today, the office is in Jacksonville Beach, where Pech has rehired two former Software602 employees at BinaryNow, of which he’s president and co-owner. Brandon Sturgeon is his partner in the venture. The new company sells Software602 products for instant download, as well as products from other companies.

Kingsoft Office was purchased by over ten China State-Owned Enterprises including: Sino Steel Corporation, China General Technology Group, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation and others through a signing ceremony in Beijing.

Encrypt PowerPoint (.PPT) presentations with 128-bit RC4 password protection

Kingsoft Presentation can secure a PowerPoint (.PPT) presentation with strong 128-bit RC4 password encryption. This is standard functionality and no additional file encryption software is needed. This article describes how to use password encryption in a secure way. If the instructions are followed properly, the result is an encrypted document that can only be opened by entering the correct password.

Encrypt the presentation on save

You can easily encrypt a presentation, all encryption settings are found directly on the Kingsoft Presentation Save dialog. Do the following to start the encryption process:

Open Kingsoft Presentation.
Click File – Save As….
Click the Encrypt… button.

Set the presentation password

Presentation security is based on the presentation password. A strong password is hard to guess but easy to remember. To be safe, we recommend a minimum password length of 10 characters. Click the Advanced… button to select the Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP).

Choose the encryption type

A Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) is a set of algorithms used for encoding and decoding. The default CSP is Office Standard. This is a CSP with publicly known security issues. Documents that are secured with the weak Office XOR or Office Standard encryption type can be cracked easily. It is recommended to choose a provider with at least 128-bits in the key length. Starting with the Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider v1.0, the length is 128bits and should provide adequate security.

AV-Comparatives Summary Report 2009: Kingsoft Wins Medals for Scan Speed and Overall Performance

With the year 2009 behind us, AV-Comparatives has released their Summary Report for 2009. Kingsoft Internet Security 9 Plus has been awarded two medals: GOLD for Best Scanning Speed, and SILVER for Best Overall Speed.

Kingsoft Ranked 16th in Forbes 2010 China Up and Comers Appraisal

Kingsoft has been selected by Forbes China, the world-renowned magazine, as one of the most promising up and comers in China for 2010, with a leap from 51st place in 2008 to 16th place this year. Kingsoft has been selected for the third time in a roll, which proves that the company is highly competitive and profitable with huge potentials for further growth and development.

This is the sixth time Forbes China has conducted an independent appraisal of over 8,000 SMEs with an annual revenue from 5 million to 1 billion in China. The calculation of the ranking is based on the weighted computation derived from the growth index (3 years weighted sales growth rate and profit growth rate), return rate index (3 years weighted ROA and ROE), profitability index (sales profit rate) and scale index of enterprises with some candidates participated in site visits. Through all these processes, the top 200 SMEs with greatest growth potentials are ranked accordingly.

Kingsoft Internet Security gains ADVANCED+ rating from AV-Comparatives December 2009 Performance Test

AV-Comparatives has completed testing of Kingsoft Internet Security 9 Plus for their Performance Test in December 2009. The focus of this test was on the system performance impact of the real-time on-access components of the security software. The complete results can be found here.

The test was performed on a clean Windows XP Professional SP3 system with defragmented disks. They repeated each test several times and averaged the results. In several cases they ran the test and then ran the same test again, to handle programs that learn and therefore run more quickly after the first time.

Archive and convert Google Gmail e-mail and attachments to Adobe PDF through SSL POP3

Print2PDF can be used to convert e-mail messages and attachments from any POP3 account. This example will show you how to setup your Gmail account to allow POP3 access, configure the PDF conversion settings to add attachments as PDF attachments, and define the e-mail archive folder.

Configure your Google Gmail account to allow POP3 access

By default, Gmail does not allow POP3 connectivity to your e-mail messages. Please do the following to allow access over POP3:

Login to Google Gmail.
Click Settings and then click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
Click Enable POP for all mail.
Click Save Changes.

Configure the Print2PDF Watcher

This example will show how to connect the Print2PDF Watcher to your Google Gmail account and convert all e-mail and attachments into one PDF. Do the following:

Launch Print2PDF Watcher.
Select the Watched e-mail radio button.
Enter pop.gmail.com for the POP3 server, enter your Gmail username/password for POP3 login name/password, enter 995 for the Port, and enable the Use secure connection (SSL) checkbox.
Change Remove after to 999 so the watcher will not remove messages from the inbox.
Change Convert to Letter and attachments.
Change Attachments to Add attachments as PDF attachments.
Click the Output tab.
Change the Output file name to %EMAILMESSAGE-ID%.
Enable the Output to folder checkbox and enter C:\Gmail\output\
Enable the Move source to folder and enter C:\Gmail\archive\
Clicik File Save Configuration As, and give the configuration a name like Gmail.ini.
Now click Start to begin the conversion process.

Once the POP3 download and PDF conversion is complete, you will find the output PDF documents in the OUTPUT folder and the original source .EML messages in the ARCHIVE folder. See the screenshot below to compare the directories:

Our pay what you want social experiment is over. If you missed it, check out our previous posts. Thanks go out to everyone who participated and purchased Kingsoft Office and Kingsoft Internet Security. We would like to share a few interesting facts about this social experiment with you.

How much people paid

82% of purchasers picked the cheapest option and paid the minimum payment of $2 required ($1 per application). The second largest group (8%) paid $10 per order. In the end only 0.6 % paid the full retail price of $39.95. The average price per order was $3.32.

The best day

Our best day was December 9, 2009. This day generated 18.5% of sales. Although this was not the most popular day on our site, we ended up with a 6% conversion ratio between web visitors and orders. We believe we experienced a mismatch of regular online traffic with offline traffic from an article printed in the Florida Times Union. This newspaper delivered the most motivated buyers to our site with an average price per order of $3.70, 11% higher than usual. A big thanks goes also to The Inquirer and various other online blogs that delivered a high volume of visitors to our site and made this experiment possible.

Approximate value by country

Orders were placed from 22 countries. Just for curiosity sake, we analyzed the payment amount using the per-capita GDP of the country in question to estimate the “approximate software value” for buyers from each country, using the United Stated as a base for this comparison. We use United States as a base because all payments from our e-commerce provider were converted to USD and because the majority of sales (37.36%) came from USA customers.

As you can see the approximate software value per country fluctuates from $2.39 to $119.20. Of course, we understand that these results are very speculative and do not represent a real value of the product, which is individual to each buyer. Thanks again to everyone who bought the software.

Kingsoft Internet Security passes AV-Comparatives Potentially Unwanted Applications November 2009 Test

AV-Compariative has completed testing of Kingsoft Internet Security 9 Plus for their Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUA) Test in November 2009. The focus of this test was on the detection of grey area malware. The complete results can be found here.

The first PUA test contained 750,297 individual samples that cover adware, spyware, and rogue software gathered between January 2009 and October 2009. Not all security products include detection for this grey area malware. Sixteen products were tested and set on the highest detection settings (except for Sophos and F-Secure, per their own request), and put to the test.

The results seem to suggest that the best antivirus applications that regularly rank highly in general malware tests are not necessarily as good at anti-adware, antispyware, and antirogue detection. That said, all 16 products detected at least 85 percent of the threats, which is respectable. Overall, we can say that the detection rate of PUAs is similar to the detection rate of general malware.
