The number of smartphone sold exceeded the number of personal computers sold during last year. In next few years, it will triple it since all dumb-phones will be eventually replaced with smartphones. Critical question is: “Who is going to win next platform war? “. Apple has definitely a good chance to take over the world now, if they open their platform. Google needs to find a way to motivate more developers and put their act together with addressing the fragmentation problem with multiple versions on the market. And Microsoft will have to execute a serious Hail Mary pass to come back and catch up with other two players.  The winner will be the consumer, as the quality of new operating systems will increase and price decrease with healthy competition from three strong vendors.

To create a debug log, do the following:

1. Click the Start button, then click on Software602 Print2PDF
2. Continue by clicking on Print2PDF Configuration.
3. You will now see your Print2PDF Configuration options. Click to add a checkmark to the Enable debug log option and pick the location where you want to save your debug log.
4. Click Ok to save your settings.

Now, open the document you are having problem with and try converting again. The debug information will be written to the “Print2PDF.log” debug log file at the location you specified.

Note to Citrix and Terminal Services Admins: You must insure that the user encountering the difficulty has at least write access to the drive or folder you specified.

Troubleshooting the installation process: Create “instdrv.log” on your c: drive and install will write information into it.

1. Open SlimPublisher.

Image Compression Options:

Image compression provides control over image fidelity in the output PDF document.  There are three image compression formats offered in Print2PDF:

JPEG 2000: This is default format used by the program. This method is suitable for large grayscale and color images. JPEG 2000 is a new compression ‘wavelet-based’ standard developed to replace the original JPEG standard. In a moderately compressed image, JPEG 2000 will deliver a level of quality that exceeds the conventional JPEG format by roughly 20%. JPEG 2000 operates in lossy or lossless mode.  Lossy means that it removes image data and may reduce image quality, but it attempts to do so with minimal loss. Lossless means it will not affect image quality. The quality determines which mode is used.  Requires Adobe Reader 6 or greater to view.

JPEG: This method is suitable for moderate sized grayscale and color images. JPEG is lossy, which means that it removes image data and may reduce image quality, but it attempts to do so with minimal loss. The Quality determines the amount of compression used. High quality means less compression (larger file size) and Low quality means more compression (smaller file size).

ZIP: This format is good to use on images with large areas of single colors or repeating patterns. The ZIP method is lossless, which means it will not affect image quality. ZIP compression is always used for images with 256 colors or less and CCITT compression is always used for black and white (1-bit) images.

Other important options:

Downsize image resolution: This option will reduce the resolution of images to the value set in Print resolution. This option is recommended as downsizing images can reduce the size of the PDF file. If the print resolution is greater than the image resolution, Print2PDF will not change the image resolution.

Convert RGB colors to CMYK: Enable this option to convert RGB colors to CMYK.  Make sure you have a CMYK profile associated with the Print2PDF printer.

But what about the threat posed by mobile devices?

These days it’s not uncommon to see kids of all ages surfing the web with mobile devices. And these kids are savvy, in many cases probably more so than their parents.

Case in point: My five-year-old daughter recently asked – as she frequently does – to play Angry Birds on my phone. I set the game up for her and left the room for a few minutes. When I returned, I noticed she was playing a version with graphics I didn’t recognize. I discovered she downloaded an application on her own – lucky for me, the free one. And there I was, minutes earlier, thinking she needed help starting the game.

It’s amazing what kids can do with technology.  And scary.

Fear not, there are ways to level the playing field. For parents who want to control what their children see and do while using a mobile device, all five of the major U.S. cellular carriers offer some form of free parental controls, according to their corporate websites. Some of the services are free-of-charge but others incur a monthly charge, so be sure to check the details for each individual carrier.

• Verizon has content filters available that allow children to access a variety of forms of content – including music downloads – “with confidence that the content will be age-appropriate.” The Verizon filters have various designations that control content streams in three age-specific categories. The filters can be changed as the child ages to allow for additional content. Usage controls that are also available help manage time spent on the phone.
• AT&T provides restrictions on content that may be inappropriate for children and also includes a “Purchase Blocker” that prevents ringtones, games or other paid content from being downloaded.
• T-Mobile introduced “Family Allowance” as a way for parents to have control over what services can be used on their children’s phones and to what extent. The service sets limits on downloads and the number of minutes available in a given month.
• Sprint/Nextel allows the primary account holder to manage access by limiting browsing to about 100 pre-screened websites that are considered clean for all ages. Parents are also able to control which phone numbers may be called.
• Alltel parental controls allow content featuring pornography, gambling and violence to be blocked. A “dynamic rating” database updates the system so new or unrated sites, and those with mixed content, don’t slip through the cracks.
• Firefly, a mobile phone service manufactured specifically for kid use has built-in parental controls that restrict incoming and outgoing calls and texting.

For cellular users who don’t have one of the major carriers, there are products such as Net Nanny, Phone Sheriff, Mobile Sentry and Mobicip that offer universally compatible paid services. These vendors offer a variety of features including filtered internet content and restrictions on sending photos and video. They also have GPS locators, text monitoring, time management and purchase restrictions but each service is different so be sure to pay attention to the components of each specific plan.
